Hello Governing Board Members,

My name is Rachel Thune Real, and I teach at Mountain View. I am seeking your commitment to implementing antiracist educational programs in classrooms and professional development sessions across the District.

Since the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, “critical race theory” has attracted significant media attention. Rather than dive into the specifics of this often misunderstood philosophy, I’ll clarify that antiracism is the idea of actively promoting racial tolerance.

As educational leaders, we have the ethical obligation to empower learners of all backgrounds to engage in lessons and discussions on antiracism to ensure the wellbeing of all students and staff, especially those who have historically experienced systemic and structural racism.

The students and staff of Mesa Public Schools need the Governing Board’s explicit support in providing stakeholders with opportunities to learn about and foster antiracism to create safe and equitable learning communities. I hope you have the courage to do so and stand on the right side of history.

Sincerely,

Rachel Thune Real
